Medical Treatment in India for Somali Patients: Cost, Visa & Travel Guide
Patients travelling from Somalia, whether they live in Mogadishu, Kismayo, Baidoa or elsewhere, go to India for planned medical care such as cardiac, orthopedic, bariatric, fertility and cosmetic treatment. Somalia is not on India's official e-Visa list, so Somali patients apply for a regular medical visa, and the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa publishes medical visa guidelines for Somali nationals. The total cost, your travel plans and the hospital you choose depend on your treatment plan. HealPassage helps Somali patients compare options and request a personalized cost estimate.

Why Somali Patients Choose India for Treatment
Patients from Somalia choose India mainly for access to specialist care, treatment costs that are often lower than in many other overseas destinations, and hospitals that are used to treating international patients. The right choice still depends on your condition, your doctor's advice and your budget.
-
Specialist care and advanced treatment
India has large hospitals with specialists in areas such as cardiology, orthopedics, neurology and fertility care. Which hospital and doctor suit you depends on your diagnosis and the procedure you need.
-
Costs that are often lower
For many planned procedures, treatment in India often costs less than in many other overseas destinations. The difference varies by treatment and hospital, so ask for an itemised written estimate before you decide.
-
English is widely used
English is widely used in Indian hospitals, which can make it easier to discuss your diagnosis, ask questions and understand your treatment plan and consent forms. If you prefer to communicate in another language, ask the hospital in advance whether interpreter support is available.
-
Support for international patients
Many hospitals have international patient teams, and facilitators such as HealPassage can help you compare options and organise the practical side of your trip.
Treatments you can explore
These are the main areas we cover. Each page explains common procedures, what affects the cost and what to ask before you decide.
What Does Treatment in India Cost for Somali Patients?
There is no single price. The cost depends on your treatment, the hospital, the type of room, how long you stay and whether your care plan changes. Many planned procedures cost less in India than in countries such as the UK or US, but the only reliable figure is a written, itemised estimate based on your own medical reports.
What affects the cost
- The procedure itself: a simple procedure and a complex surgery are priced very differently.
- The hospital and city: prices vary between hospitals and locations.
- Your surgeon and care team: experience and seniority can affect fees.
- Room type and length of stay: a private room and a longer recovery add to the bill.
- Implants, devices and medicines: the type and brand you need can change the total.
- Tests, scans and complications: extra tests or unexpected needs can add cost.
What a written estimate should include
- The name of the hospital and the doctor who will treat you.
- The exact procedure and the expected length of hospital stay.
- The room type and what the price covers, such as surgeon's fees, nursing, medicines and meals.
- Any implants or devices, with the type and brand.
- What is not included and what could cost extra if your plan changes.
- The currency, payment terms and any deposit required.
Costs outside the hospital bill
Plan for these as well as the treatment itself. If you will pay in a foreign currency, exchange rate changes can also affect the final cost in the currency you earn or save in.
- Return flights
- Visa fees
- Accommodation for you and a companion
- Local transport
- Food and daily expenses
- Medicines to take home
- Follow-up care in Somalia

💬 Request an EstimateMedical Visa for Somali Patients Travelling to India
Somali patients apply for a regular medical visa through the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa, because India's mission in Somalia is closed. The Embassy's guidelines also name the High Commission of India in Nairobi. Somalia is not on India's official e-Visa list, so the online e-Medical Visa is not an option. The Embassy's October 2024 guidelines ask for a signed invitation letter from the Indian hospital, a token payment of about 25% of the estimated treatment cost, and a set of documents from you.

How to apply, step by step
-
1
Get a medical invitation letter from an Indian hospital
The letter must be on the hospital's letterhead with a unique reference number, and be signed in ink, stamped and dated. It must briefly describe your illness and treatment plan, give an estimated cost including consultation and tests, and mention any follow-up treatment.
-
2
Make the token payment to the hospital
The letter should include the hospital's bank details and ask you to pay about 25% of the estimated cost. Pay only to the account named in the hospital's signed letter, keep proof of payment, and ask the hospital for its refund policy in case you cannot travel or the visa is declined.
-
3
The hospital notifies the Embassy
Once it receives your payment, the hospital must tell you and the Embassy. It emails the invitation letter and proof of your payment to the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa and sends you a copy.
-
4
Gather your documents
You need a non-criminal record certificate, a bank statement, a referral letter from your hospital in Somalia, the invitation letter, proof of the advance payment and your original passport. See the checklist below.
-
5
Complete the online application
Fill in the visa application form online with accurate personal details and submit it. Then print it, stick on a passport-size photograph and sign it.
-
6
Pay the fee, attend the interview and wait for your visa
The guidelines list a fee of US$83 per application. The Embassy may interview the patient or attendant and ask for more documents from you or the hospital. Plan your trip only once the visa has been issued.

Companions, health rules and good to know
Travelling with a companion. Attendants receive a medical attendant visa for the sole purpose of assisting the patient. The guidelines say patients and attendants are expected to travel together and stay together.
Yellow fever certificate. Somalia is not on the Bureau of Immigration's list of notified yellow fever endemic countries. However, anyone arriving from or transiting through a listed country needs a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, and without one can be quarantined for up to 6 days. Ethiopia and Kenya are both on the list, so if your flight connects through Addis Ababa or Nairobi, you need the certificate. Check your route and get vaccinated in good time.
Health declaration (Ebola screening). India has made an online health self-declaration form mandatory for all international arrivals through the official Air Suvidha 2.0 portal, following a health ministry advisory in response to an Ebola outbreak in 2026. It covers your travel history over the previous 21 days. The advisory asks travellers to complete it within 24 hours before arrival, ideally during web check-in, and to carry the downloaded form. Check the portal for the current rules before you fly.
Why the rules are strict. The Embassy says it introduced these steps because medical visas were being misused. A genuine patient should expect to be asked for documents and a payment before the visa decision, and should ask the hospital for its refund policy in writing.
