Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

A 900+ bed charitable trust hospital with roots tracing back to 1921 Lahore, and a decades-long record of medical firsts in India.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is a 900+ bed, NABH-accredited hospital in Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi, run by the Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society — a charitable trust, not a corporate hospital chain. Its origins trace to 1921 in Lahore, founded by civil engineer and philanthropist Sir Ganga Ram; after Partition, his family helped establish this Delhi hospital, inaugurated in 1954. It became the first hospital in Delhi (and second in India) to install a CT scanner in 1982, and was among the first in South Asia to establish a Minimal Access Surgery department. Today it offers over 70 specialties, including strong programs in cardiology, neurology, oncology, and vascular surgery.

History, Ownership & Accreditation

A Legacy Rebuilt After Partition

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital's story begins with its namesake — Sir Ganga Ram (1851-1927), a civil engineer and one of the most prominent philanthropists of pre-independence India, knighted in 1922. In the early 1900s, when most Indian philanthropy was religious in nature, he chose to fund medical services instead, founding a hospital and medical college in Lahore. After his death in 1927, his sons Balak Ram and Sewak Ram carried the work forward, establishing a Trust Society in 1929 and completing a 700-bed hospital in Lahore.

Following Partition in 1947, the family's Delhi connection came through Shri Dharma Vira — Sir Ganga Ram's grandson-in-law and Private Secretary to Prime Minister Nehru — who helped secure 11 acres of land in Karol Bagh, then a refugee resettlement area, to rebuild the hospital's legacy in India. The foundation stone was laid by PM Nehru in April 1951; the hospital opened with just 40 beds and one operation theatre, and has since grown into a 900+ bed institution. It remains run today by the Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society, a charitable trust rather than a corporate hospital group.

Ownership

Unlike most other hospitals in our Delhi network, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is not part of a corporate hospital chain. It is run by the Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society, a charitable trust founded by Sir Ganga Ram's family in 1929 — meaning institutional decisions here are made by a Board of Management and Trust Society rather than shareholders or a corporate parent group.

Getting there & settling in

International Patient Services at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital's own website confirms it maintains a dedicated International Patients department, though we weren't able to verify the specific services offered from their own materials.

The hospital's site does confirm it has a dedicated department for this. The services listed below reflect what's commonly offered by comparable Delhi hospitals, not confirmed specifics for SGRH — we will verify exact services directly with their International Patients desk as part of coordinating your case, and update this page once confirmed.

Visa Assistance

Typically includes support with Medical Visa documentation, commonly offered by hospitals with a dedicated international patients department.

Interpreter Services

Language interpreter support is standard practice among Delhi hospitals with international patient volumes, though exact language coverage should be confirmed directly.

Airport Transfer

Airport pickup assistance is typical for hospitals serving international patients, subject to confirmation of current arrangements.

Accommodation Guidance

General guidance on nearby accommodation options for patients and attendants, common practice though not independently confirmed for SGRH.

Medical Records Coordination

Standard practice of reviewing sent medical reports ahead of a patient's arrival to prepare a treatment plan in advance.

Follow-Up Support

Discharge and follow-up coordination is standard across comparable hospitals, to be confirmed with SGRH's own department directly.

How HealPassage fits in

Given the gap in verified specifics here, HealPassage's role is especially important for this hospital: we'll personally confirm exact International Patient Services, visa requirements, and logistics directly with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital's own department before you travel, rather than relying on general assumptions — so you get accurate, current information specific to your case.

What is Sir Ganga Ram Hospital best known for? +

Its long institutional history and broad specialty range — over 70 departments including cardiology, neurology, oncology, vascular surgery, and genetics. It was the first hospital in Delhi (and second in India) to install a CT scanner in 1982, and was among the first in South Asia with a dedicated Minimal Access Surgery department.

What accreditation does the hospital hold? +

NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) accreditation.

Does Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have an international patients department? +

How does Sir Ganga Ram compare to the corporate hospitals in your network? +

Both types deliver quality accredited care, but they differ in structure. Corporate hospitals like Fortis, Max, and Apollo often have more standardized, heavily marketed international patient programs.
